Motivation

The primary motivation  for the development of the Para-IT certification course is to support the aim of the Mission Statement, which is to leave no one behind . This drives us to ensure that regardless of the interns' intellectual challenges, socio-economic status, or life circumstance, they should be given the support to reach their full potential.

In the delivery of the curriculum, we are governed by another edict that states that if there are no barriers to access, there would be no limits to growth. This implies that Para-IT does not have any preconceived ideas about what the interns will learn or how they should learn. An Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP) is eventually arrived at after much consideration. We nevertheless push the boundaries of learning opportunities never assuming that the content is inappropriate. Only the interns decide what is best for them. Our job is to expose them to as many learning opportunities as possible.

The goal of the IPDP is to place our interns in the pre-professional layer with the employable skills that will allow them to compete and secure employment. The positive outcomes we have to date, have convinced us that our curriculum is appropriate and our teaching style gets good results.

Relationship with the Non-Profit and Corporate Sectors

Our graduating interns need jobs and hence for many years Para-IT has established contacts in the education community, NGOs and corporate sectors by networking and volunteer activities.

Our approach is to create learning, volunteer and employment opportunities for our interns. We also need to make this cohort aware of the many strength and business opportunities our interns offer in return:

a) Demographics: The "Baby Boom" generation has started to retire in large numbers. The labour market is already suffering from gaps in the labour force but only for well-trained employees with employable skills. The Business community and in particular the social enterprise sector, would benefit from savings and efficiency if Para-IT graduates were employed since this will release higher paid professional staff to focus on their core competencies. Well trained Para-IT graduates could provide cost effective solutions to the staffing problems particularly for entry level jobs in the
Pre-Professional Layer.
